Every two years, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League (RSOL), a booster organization for the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and symphonic music in the Richmond, Va. area, hosts its popular Designer Home competition and fundraiser. The fundraiser has interior and landscape designers compete for a chance to design one of the rooms, closets or outdoor living spaces in a home that is open for special events and public tours following its completion. The designers submit proposals and work samples for consideration and then are interviewed by a panel before being chosen for one of the limited opportunities.

In 2014, the League departed from its tradition of renovating an older home and asked Bel Arbor Builders to build a new home for the League’s masterpiece. Bel Arbor was well-suited for the job as the Richmond-based, family-owned company builds only 20 to 25 homes a year throughout the Richmond metro area – all of which are luxury custom homes. Bel Arbor, which believes in giving back to its community, happily signed on, discounting its services, and securing in-kind donations and discounted products from suppliers. The builder’s responsibility was to provide a blank slate for each space for the 24 designers to finish with paint colors, flooring, furnishings and accessories.

Construction of the 4,200-square-foot home with 1,100 square feet of outdoor living space began in January 2014 and was finished in August 2014, in time for the designers to complete their spaces for the public tours in September and October. Bel Arbor Builders worked from an online plan adapted by McAllister and Foltz Architecture.

The “Hampton Manor” home boasts many signature features. The cultured stone, gray shingle-style siding, and white trim and accents provide excellent curb appeal. The entry “tower” above the slate-floored, stone-walled portico has windows on all four sides and lighting that provides a glow after dusk. The white aluminum-clad exteriors on the Weather Shield Premium Series direct set, and standard and arch-top casement windows, and hinged patio doors with multiple fixed side panels, add to the home’s appealing exteriors. Bel Arbor Builders works with Custom View Windows in Richmond to specify exclusively Weather Shield Premium Series products for its luxury homes.

Once inside the custom-made, solid mahogany, carriage-style double entry doors, the dramatic two-story foyer conveys elegance and draws people into the adjacent family room, dining room or study between the foyer and the master suite. A sweeping curved stairway leads to the second floor, where two bedrooms with their own separate baths and a gaming room create a haven for children or guests.

A variety of lovely outdoor living spaces make the most of the home’s sizeable lot. Adjacent to the portico is a finely appointed front courtyard nestled between a two-car garage and the main home. An octagonal, two-story screen porch provides comfortable seating in a transitional space outside both the breakfast area and the second-floor game room. An expansive backyard deck sits atop the lower level of the screen porch and features clusters of comfortable seating and dining areas amid the private, tree-lined setting.

By all accounts, the 2014 RSOL Designer Home was a huge success. Over 6,000 people toured the home during the two months, raising more money than any previous RSOL Designer Home. The home was purchased by a young family early in the construction process, enabling the homeowners to work with the designers to create spaces to their taste. For its work, Bel Arbor Builders has been invited to participate in the 2016 Homearama, a single-development, new-home showcase that highlights the latest in interior decorating ideas and trends in new home construction. The builder plans a European-style home featuring Weather Shield’s Contemporary Collection, a suite of Premium Series windows and doors with narrow profile frames, sleek European-style hardware, and interior and exterior finishes complementary of today’s modern homes.
