Background on the Project Built in 1923, the former Sears Department Store building in downtown Shreveport, LA, is getting new life thanks to well-known New Orleans developer and music preservationist Roland von Kurnatwoski, the man behind Tipitina’s Club in New Orleans and the Tipitina’s Foundation. Despite its historic nature, the building had been considered for demolition after sitting idle since 1980. It and two adjacent commercial buildings are being renovated into the 624lofts, which will combine entertainment, retail, business and residential into the multi-year redevelopment project. Phase 1 of the two phase project is slated for completion by December 31, 2015, and already the locals are welcoming the positive effect it is having on the downtown.

When renovation began, the project team, including New Orleans architect Rick Fifield, AIA, and general contractor Fountainbleu Construction chose to pursue certification by the National Park Service / Department of the Interior, adhering to the agency’s scrupulous guidelines for all aspects of the renovation, including the window specifications. The design team spec’d Weather Shield Premium Series double hung and casement sashes that slid into the building’s existing frames and provided the same glass exposure as the original windows. A small gap between the new sashes and the frames was bridged with a custom casing system designed by the architect. Fifield said, “It was a sophisticated installation but they installed perfectly. The product was excellent and met all of the National Park Service criteria. They helped us earn the designation of a NPS-certified building.”

In addition to the products in the Sears building, Weather Shield Premium Series direct set windows were used in the two other buildings in the 624lofts project.
