How to Choose a Window Contractor

6/20/2015 9:22:11 PM

Windows are among the most important exterior features of your home. They play a role in aesthetics both inside and out, impact energy efficiency and determine how ventilated your home can be.

If you’ve done your research and know what type of windows you want to install, you’ve taken an important first step. However, finding the right window replacement contractor to perform the installation is just as important as choosing the right window style. A quality installation determines window longevity, beauty, and functionality—in addition to peace of mind throughout the entire replacement process.

Finding a Qualified Window Contractor

A quick internet search will tell you there are many window replacement contractors in your area. Everyone claims to be the best, the most experienced and the perfect fit for the job you have in mind. Fortunately, you can narrow down the list by asking different contractors the following questions:
  • Do you have any industry credentials? Awards, certifications and affiliations with professional window associations aren’t required, but hiring a contractor with these credentials increases the chance of a successful installation.
  • Are you licensed in your state? A license ensures the contractor keeps up with the latest best practices and takes the necessary steps to keep their license up-to-date.
  • Are you insured? Insurance takes the liability off your shoulders if a worker is injured or if property damage occurs during the installation. Neither of these instances should happen, but a reputable contractor always has the necessary insurance coverage just in case.
  • Do you have a list of references I can contact? References are customers who have worked with the contractor recently. When you get in touch, ask references if the work was done on time, on budget and to their satisfaction.
  • How long have you been in the window replacement industry? The last thing you want is to be a new contractor’s guinea pig. Look for a contractor that has been in business for at least a decade.
  • What window brands do you carry? If you know you want casement windows, you must realize not all brands are created equal. Research the top window brands and ask if the contractor carries what you’re looking for. Some of the best contractors will carry multiple brands of windows to ensure that the customer gets the best product to meet their needs, rather than the one choice the contractor can provide.
  • Do you have a photo gallery or case studies of previous work? Viewing examples of past work gives you an idea of whether this contractor delivers the quality and type of windows you’re interested in having installed. You can ask for the references on these projects to see if the homeowners was truly satisfied with the contractor from the project’s start to finish.
  • Do you have a showroom? If you live close enough to a showroom, viewing windows in person is even more telling than seeing them in photographs.
These questions are a great place to start, but you may have other concerns to address. As you do your preliminary research, write down any questions that come to mind. Then, when you’re ready to call potential window replacement contractors, you’ll be armed and ready.
